Steve Cooper receives OAM
Congratulations to the chairman of the NSW, ACT, QLD Interschools Snowsports Championships on his Order of Australia Medal, which has now been officially presented in a ceremony at Government House Canberra with Governor General Sir Peter Cosgrove awarding the honours. Steve Cooper OAM is well known in the snow sports community in Australia and the recognition is very well deserved and we are thankful for his strong passion of increasing competitive snow sports participation, helping athletes reach their potential and organising successful, friendly, fair and safe inclusive snow sports events. Steve has a particular skill in making all young athletes feel like champions when he is commenting on a Interschools course or medal presentation.
About Steve Cooper OAM
Steve is the chairman of NSW, ACT, QLD Interschools Snowsports Championships and Director of Ski & Snowboard Australia (SSA), along with a long list of other voluntary appointments past and present in snow sports in Australia. Steve was recognised in the 2019 Australia Day honours list receiving an Order of Australian Medal. In the Australian honours system appointments to the Order of Australia confer the highest recognition for outstanding achievement and service.
Former Deputy Principal of Jindabyne Central School, Steve has been chairman of the NSW, ACT and QLD Interschools Snowsports Championships since 2003. During Steve’s time as Chairman, entries have seen over a 100% increase, which can be attributed to Steve’s management, vision and tireless volunteer hours that he puts in. Over 6,000 participants compete annually across in the Interschools competition in Australia.
Steve has been a director of SSA since 2010, is the chairman of the National Participation Committee, and has previously served as a member of the National Freestyle Committee.
Steve was a director of NSW Snowsports since 2003 and was integral in the unification with SSA. With particular interest in freestyle, Steve spent 8 years taking a very active volunteer role as chairman of NSW Freestyle. Steve was in charge of the overall coordination of the NSW events and programs, long term planning with resorts and SSA, developing and maintaining sponsorship relationships, marketing and promotion.
It is an amazing effort that Steve contributes so much of his personal time to snow sports administration to develop opportunities to grow the sport.
